While measuring one side of a rectangle on average gives you a good estimate for the total area, it only works if your rectangles follow a standard distribution. If they follow a fat-tail it’ll not work so well.

So if you’re using a proxy measure to estimate the value of the work you do i.e. hours, cost, story points etc. be warned you need to consider more dimensions to get an accurate picture.
