It may well be an urban myth but I understand the US Marines have a motto for when the shit begins to hit the fan
“Keep moving, stay in touch and head for the high ground.”
This got me thinking, when we hit a similar situation in software development is there a simple motto that can help. I was surprised how similar they might be with just two words changed and one added.
“Keep delivering, stay in touch and head for high value features.”
What I’m saying is, first don’t go dark, keep delivering code on a regular basis. If anything increase the cadence of delivery if things have got truly chaotic.
Then keep talking to everyone in the team and most importantly the business stakeholders, and finally keep the focus on what delivers the most value, if you follow the value this will ensure you head away from the danger zone and towards a place of more certainty.
